Walnut Creek Elementary

2016 - Year in Review!

On December 19th, 2016, first grade held their annual Economy Fair.  The fair is a creative and practical way to teach students about money, goods and services, and running a business.  The fair provides students with real world knowledge on how our economy works.

Walnut Creek’s Winter Performance was held on December 15th, 2016.  Our very first student orchestra gave a wonderful performance.  Every grade level sang festive holiday songs.

The week of December 5th through December 9th, the Walnut Creek Library in collaboration with the Assistance League of Austin held a book giveaway event.  Months before, the Assistance League of Austin held a book drive to benefit Walnut Creek students.  The book drive was a success!  More than 750 books were donated!  Throughout the week of December 5th, every class visited the library, and students were allowed to choose a book to keep and take home.  Promoting and supporting literacy is an integral part of academic success.

On November 11th, 2016, Walnut Creek held its annual Literacy Night.  Literacy Night is a fun-filled event that celebrates literacy and our most cherished books through games and activities.  Every family who attended the event received 5-10 books to start their very own home library.

On November 4th, 2016, Walnut Creek was visited by three famous authors: Gitty Daneshvari, Steven Weinberg, and Mike Curato.  This was made possible through the Texas Book Festival’s Reading Rock Stars program.  The program brings nationally famous authors to Title I schools.  Along with dynamic presentations, each author provides each student with a signed copy of their book!  Walnut Creek is honored to have been chosen to participate in such an amazing program that promotes literacy.  To learn more about the program visit: http://www.texasbookfestival.org/reading-rock-stars/

On November 3rd, 2016, Walnut Creek held its annual Catch Night.  Students and their families visited Walnut Creek to learn about health and nutrition through fun activities.
